A Love Story Poem by Lone Dog

A Love Story

Rating: 3.5

They met at school one sunny afternoon,
And it was then their love began to bloom.
It nourished like a babe in Mother's arms,
Then grew with childhood innocence and charm.
Maturing like the asters in the Fall
It burst with splendid freshness touching all.
A lullaby of warmth and tenderness,
`Twas simple, pure and wholesome in its zest.

But blackened clouds of tragedy then struck.
Their love was interrupted with bad luck.
The girl was told she had a failing heart
And soon would need a transplant or would part.
The lad was devastated with the news,
And life began to take on grayish hues,
And slowness permeated every step,
And oft' at night, the lad broke down and wept.

With tearful eyes reflecting candlelight,
A premonition came to him one night.
He told his folks that if he e'er should part,
He wanted her to have his healthy heart.
In just two weeks the brooding lad was dead.
They found him in the morning on his bed.
His parents never thought that he would part.
They did not know what he knew in his heart.

So, under surgeon's light and expert knife,
His heart was used to give the girl new life.
In clay so cold they sadly buried him;
A youthful corpse without a heart therein.
But even though this noble student died,
And `round his grave his many classmates cried,
He lives within his dear friend's lonely heart,
And when she dies, together they'll depart.
