A Matter Of Perspective Poem by Frederick Francis

A Matter Of Perspective

An affliction we all suffer is narrow mindedness.
It does just what it says and allows us to see less.
We come by it honestly; it is not a conscious choice.
But occasionally make an effort to give the counter point a voice.

You are committed to your views, as any person of passion would be.
So I can understand why opposing views are hard to see.
By hearing them out, you’re not any sort of traitor.
If you hear nothing persuasive, it will make your conviction greater.

In my mind the coward, who won’t stand for debate
Does so because he knows it’s already too late.
In his mind he knows his own beliefs time has gone;
And in open debate he’d have no leg to stand on.

However opinions held is not to what I mean to speak.
It was simply a footing for my topic I was trying to seek.
Like opinions, problems, are simply a matter of perspective.
The best decisions that are made come from knowledge that’s collective.

I am not speaking of the eyes but rather of the mind.
Change the perspective of thought and interesting solutions you will find.
The power of perspective is one we all yield,
But unless you unlock it, it will remain sealed.

What you once took as fact will be distorted and hazy.
You’ll start to sympathize with the views of those you thought crazy.
What was once true and good you might now see as wrong.
But to even conjure this up only shows that you are strong.

Truth is not required, for something to be your belief.
But when someone questions your's, leave your sword in its sheath.
Don’t be ignorant and shun them, that’s just immature,
Because as far as beliefs go, you’ll never be sure.

So when approaching a problem, don’t use the standard solution;
It’s this lack of thought that causes creative pollution.
Creativity’s like a muscle, it needs to be strengthened.
To do this, at first, required time will be lengthened.

But with effort paid, you will reap a reward.
You will brandish a mind that’s as sharp as a sword.
The grayness of uncertainty you will easily cut through,
To find the best of solutions and beliefs that suit you.

COMMENTS OF THE POEM
Kingsley Dorian 12 October 2007

A philosopher as well as a poet. There is clear-cut honesty here that gives the poem its power. The directness takes the reader by the throat, if they simply let it. It reminds me of the writers, Ayn Rand or Terry Goodkind.
