A Nosy Parker the Common Shrew Poem by john (called jack) wren

A Nosy Parker the Common Shrew

Unsociable, is the word that comes to mind,
Or quarrelsome, aggressive and resigned,
To live a life of isolation
Among decaying vegetation.
Poor in sight, strong in smell
Its nose is where it does excel
A nosy parker, and one whose snout
Will forage for those out and about.
Worms reach soil not seen before
Searching for a safe trapdoor
That will close behind to spoil
Snouts rummaging in the soil.
Woodlice and beetles running amok
Disappear like seeds from the dock,
To escape in frantic disarray
Along a darkened carriageway.
Once in a while, they will refrain
From isolation to entertain,
A member of the opposite sex
In matters elaborate and complex.
Then, they return once more
To life as it was before.
For the female however, duty calls
When wee bundles wrapped in shawls,
Are found on her doorstep destitute
With wriggerly feet, and a tiny snoot
Her young spick and span,
Parade behind, like a caravan
Of elephants, nose to tail
Going down a forest trail.
