A Poem To His Fair Lady Poem by John Thorkild Ellison

A Poem To His Fair Lady

I've got to remember you're 'just a friend'
Or my breaking heart will never mend,
I feel so lost, alone and sad
And the pain of it will drive me mad,

I can't go on with this pretence
Or act with simple common sense,
Though I know it will only drive you away
If I beg too much for you to stay!

I fully admit I am your slave
From now till I lie down in my grave,
But please understand the irony,
I'm terrified of being free!

Just to be with you a little while
Will cure my sorrows and make me smile,
Have you any idea what it means to me
To have just one hour of your company?

Please don't be angry with this fool
Or feel provoked into being cruel -
Nobody really understands
That you hold my future in your hands!

It will finish me if we ever part,
Sweet mistress of this troubled heart,
I don't deserve your sympathy
But please don't ever 'set me free'!
