A Portrait Of Beauty Poem by Edwina Reizer

A Portrait Of Beauty

A portrait of beauty is what he bought,
Not knowing what lay ahead.
He was captivated by the face and eyes
That he stared at from his bed.

He had hurried home, hung it on his wall
And stared at it for an hour.
It reminded him of a time long ago
Before his life turned sour.

He’d been in love and been taken away
In a uniform that he wore.
He remembered the love that was gone forever
That he never found anymore.

He never could find her when he returned.
It was like she had never been.
He lived his life like a hermit now,
Never finding love again.

But, the portrait, oh the portrait became
An enigma in his mind.
The beauty in the portrait he knew now
Was someone he had to find.

He traveled back to the place it was found
And asked the people there.
“Can you tell me anything about this girl?
And can you tell me where?

You got this portrait that was sold
For it’s something I must know.
It reminds me of someone I knew
Oh so long ago.”

They told him it was a picture of a girl
They adopted as their own.
She’d been born to a woman who had died
And now that the girl had grown,

She was searching for her father now
And hoping that someday
She’d find him in a miracle
That would come her way.
And as he turned he left his name
And where he could be found.
For he knew for certain she was his daughter
As he stood there quite spellbound.

And as he placed again the beauty in the portrait
On his bedroom wall,
He knew that his love was returned to him
In the strangest way of all.

And then one day came a knock at his door
As he opened it in shock.
For there stood the beauty from the portrait
Which erased all time from his clock.

This was a wonderful narrative, I had to read it three times, you can almost make a script out of this and then film it as a movie. Both characters were searching for something and found it in one another. Great write.
