A Racist Poem by Juan Olivarez

A Racist

I see the faces on a crowded sidewalk,
So many faces they fill the street.
They smile, argue, frown, or just talk,
There is no corner that is not replete.

Black faces, yellow faces, red faces, and white,
Brown smiling faces too.
To see all these faces is a beautiful sight,
A rainbow of faces under the blue.

And I say to myself' I am a racist true, '
Because I love all people just the same.
As I've gotten older, my heart just grew,
I've never cared what's in a name.

You might say' a racist, that can't be right,
If you share a smile with every face.'
And I say, 'open your eyes, and see the light,
We all belong, to the human race.'
