A Smile Poem by Teagan Bateman

A Smile

What's a smile for?
A sign of joy?
A way to express yourself?
Or is it a way to mask your true feelings?

It's scary if you think about it,
Is a smile genuine?
Or is it a cover for oneself?

The truth is,
You don't have to be an actor to act,
You can look at another person,
And smile,
But on the inside,
You're actually hiding a secret,

A secret that one keeps with them on the inside,
A secret that one wishes to keep hidden,
A secret that will always remain with you,

It cannot simply go away with a simple click,
It remains with you for a very long time,
But it doesn't come alone,
It comes with a built-in shield,
A shield called,
A smile
