A Theory Of Shadows Comments

Perhaps the shadow is a space of negative capability into which the body's impulses are projected. Its emptiness registers what the body does, but being empty it has a freedom from impulse which the body does not. Perhaps this kind of freedom is needed for consciousness. Wallace Stevens has a long difficult poem called THE MAN WITH THE BLUE GUITAR which plays with the idea of shadow as obverse of the body. Whichever actions the body takes, the shadow keeps returning to itself.

The shadow is an autonomous being, a concoction of the sun with my body as its raw material. In its essence, which is its identity, it is a self-creating thing, it exists because it desires to be, its being every moment dependent on its will. Periodically, it occupies a sun-struck space and vanishes from my view.
