A Theory Of Shadows Poem by Daniel Brick

A Theory Of Shadows

Rating: 5.0

My shadow strides
just a few steps ahead
of me or lags a few steps
behind me. MY SHADOW?
Wherefore this possessive
term? My shadow it is not!
The shadow is an autonomous
being, a concoction of the sun
with my body as its raw material.
In its essence, which is its identity,
it is a self-creating thing, it exists
because it desires to be, its being
every moment dependent on its will.
Periodically, it occupies a sun-struck
space and vanishes from my view.
Does it then hover near-by me,
or does it launch into its own
space of endeavor? Untrammeled by body,
free of gravity, what wonders does it
observe? I am rendered speechless.
My shadow strides just a few steps....

Perhaps the shadow is a space of negative capability into which the body's impulses are projected. Its emptiness registers what the body does, but being empty it has a freedom from impulse which the body does not. Perhaps this kind of freedom is needed for consciousness. Wallace Stevens has a long difficult poem called THE MAN WITH THE BLUE GUITAR which plays with the idea of shadow as obverse of the body. Whichever actions the body takes, the shadow keeps returning to itself.

This an excellent response, Denis. Your thoughts as a deeper dimension to my poem and actually answer some of the questions that motivated it. Especially your pellucid comment THE KIND OF FREEDOM NEEDED FOR CONSCIOUSNESS. Your reference to Wallace Stevens sent me back to the poem of THE BLUE GUITAR, which is luminous!

A new way of looking at the old phenomena like human shadow. I like it. Thanks. The shadow is an autonomous being, a concoction of the sun with my body as its raw material.
