A Typical Day Of Babysitting Poem by Jessica Penner

A Typical Day Of Babysitting

I try to write,
But it doesn't work.

A little girl wants me.

'Deh-ta! ' she calls.
She holds a book.

So I put down my pen
And pick her up
To read her a story.

The story's done and she's off.

I start to write,
But...

'Deh-ta! Deh-ta! ' she calls.

This time she has a doll
And a blanket.

I take her doll and wrap it up.

She's off once again
Only to return with a bottle.

It's for her baby
And she wants my help.

I put down my pen
And pick up her doll and bottle.

I show her what to do.

She tries herself.

Suddenly, she drops it.

She runs to the window.

The dogs are barking!

So once again, I try to write,
But soon she's back.

She wants me to sing.

We sing, 'Peter, James, and John'
Her favorite.

And 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star'

She runs off again.

And I try to finish my writing,
But I hear her coming...

Typical day of babysitting!

And I love it!

'Deh-ta! ' she calls...

(written a few years ago during my babysitting job. My little charge called me 'Deh-ta' because she couldn't pronounce Jessica.)
