A Vision Of A Future Life Poem by Francis Duggan

A Vision Of A Future Life

I hear the funeral dirge, the church bell chime
And the ship it takes me off to next lifetime
And I can hear the sobs of grieving wife
But she will join me in another life.

And she will live with me as wife once more
And I shall love as I loved her before
And this time we shall have small family
A little girl for her, a boy for me.

And we shall live in Canada somewhere
And our nearest neighbour big brown grizzly bear
In little hut beside the woodland green
A mere stone throw from unpolluted stream

We will not need a fridge to keep our meat
And we can catch a fish each day to eat
A hare or rabbit or young forest deer
To please our taste buds each day of the year.

In Winter when the woods are deep in snow
And icy winds through snow clad pine trees blow
We'll sing around the glowing log cabin fire
Two hours or three and then to bed retire.

When Winter snows thaw in the warmth of Spring
And nesting birds throughout the woodland sing
We'll clear the weeds in last years patch again
And plant new crops in sun and wind and rain.

No job to keep and no clock to obey
And the nearest town one hundred miles away
And Summer sun glowing bright in clear blue sky
As forest flowers bloom forth in mid July.

I hear the funeral dirge, the church bell chime
And the ship it takes me off to next lifetime
And I can hear the sobs of grieving wife
But she will join me in another life.
