A World Of Make-Believe Poem by John Thorkild Ellison

A World Of Make-Believe

Each day I look at you and inwardly grieve
That the love I feel will never be returned -
I've played a foolish game, learnt to deceive
Myself, and while my heart has yearned
I've told myself I really might achieve
Fulfilment of these silly dreams of mine,
I'll forge reality out of make-believe.
You will capitulate, you'll be my bride,
What foolishness! ! The god of love has lied
And promised me that I will get my way,
I'll live to see that unbelieveable day
When you will say you love me. It cannot be denied
The time has come to face reality,
To face the truth in all its brutal clarity,
I have to put to rest
The stupid dreams with which I've been obsessed.
I pray you'll realise
I'm walking across a bridge that's built of lies
Spanning a chasm of deep loneliness
Where many men have lost their reason
And even the greatest hero dies.
