Abau' Green River Peace Poem by Kimberly Burnham

Abau' Green River Peace

Eleven thousand people
seeking peace
"liwak marowhway" in Abau
a language of Papua New Guinea

Sandaun province: Green River district,
the westernmost people living on the Sepik River
Pacific Islanders of Papua New Guinea
South Pacific near Australia

proximity to the Nation's Capital city
Port Moresby
a place of well educated, healthy, happy and an abode for peace loving people

The West Range to the south
sparsely inhabited by peoples who speak unrelated languages
and whose cultures are more related to those of the Sepik foothills than to that of the riverine Abau
On the north side of the Sepik
in an area of swamps grading through forest to patchy grass country
peoples of unrelated language groups
share a culture not unlike that of the Abau.
