Adolescent Conquest Poem by Lorene Kinsey

Adolescent Conquest

Try again to slip into this role, become her,
the one I used to be, makes me want to spend hours
Licking the nectar from honeysuckles again,
Taunting, teasing, slowly eating
Strawberries, cherries, whipped cream,
Imagine saltwater, sand, back then it was chlorine.
Though temptations were otherwise,
His lips only met my sun-kissed cheek.

For a moment, I recall the next time
still just kids, smirk remembering
The condom wrapper, banging in the shower,
This time cheeks red with embarrassment—
not my own. She was so brave, sexual,
Leaving us giggling awkwardly
In the next room, almost silent, then broken
With his proclamation that his buddy was in idiot!

Such relief. I could feel that sort of passion within me,
not yet in a form mature enough to set free.
Made his statement to put me at ease, though
Pleased at the conquest he, himself did not achieve.

I like this poem, especially the lines about honeysuckle, strawberries, whipped cream, and sunkissed cheeks. Adolescent conquest indeed.
