All Things Considered Poem by Leria Hawkins

All Things Considered

Date:February 2,2017

I am just a woman, sir
You are just a man
Do you suggest I wear the chains?
To serve at your demand
You wrap the strings so tightly
To bind my wings from flight
Like a prisoner locked inside a cage
Robbed of will or sight
Why should you rise above me then?
To look down on my shame
How dare you to cast a shadow, sir
When you are just the same
The tarnished band that fetters
Weighs heavy on your hand
But you have not the mettle
To rise, or make a stand
Stead you rule your castle
A prison made of glass
But, be warned sir, it could shatter
In a fall to second class
I know my place, my station
My eyes are clear and true
You see, I know just who I am
But alas, I know you too!

Who then calls the reckoning, dear?
When we again are dust
Do you proclaim the pure white snow
While I rain down as rust?
