I closed the door, turned off the light
Made way for silence in the night
The music stopped, I settled in
To rid the demons, from my skin
No easy task, to stop decay
Or to keep the rushing thoughts at bay
So weak, a sentimental heart
To give so much to flame and sparks
I've turned the corner, burned the bridge
Salved the wounds to ease the itch
The path's too dark to walk again
There's nothing there but "might have beens"
I'll turn a cheek; forget the past
The spell's to easily re-cast
When comes a knocking at my door
What lingers there must be ignored
No point in peeking ‘neath the shade
The ghost outside cannot be swayed
It's best to stay the other side
Where strings a'last have come untied
No bait can lure me there again
To be the victim, to bear his sin
A decade long is far too long
To bear the burden of his songs
Again, again, I hear him sing
His words a jolt, a bitter sting
But, I will not linger for a bite
I closed the door, turned off the light

Has the atmosphere of a country song with a dash of gothic Halloween flavor. You are haunted by those ghostly might-have-beens. Some times dark silence is the safest place, if only we can endure being haunted by memories.5 stars!

Leria, I loved this poem. Just a touch of sadness, but so right in decision-making. It shows such strength of character. It is so well-written, too. Thanks for sharing it with all of us.
