An Angel's Soul Poem by JAMES T. ADAIR

An Angel's Soul

She looked up
Poor little young soul
Knew nothing about pain or illness
Yet here she was puking uncontrollably
Foamy and clear puddles
All that was left of her insides
as her back arched
her hips twice as wide as her narrow empty stomach
muscles tense in spasm, taught against a birdlike rib cage
Young tight flesh and bone tightened in pain, like a twisted rope
Dorie....I whispered and tried not to cry
What's wrong Dorie? God please help her.....
I caressed her head and saw her sad hollow eyes pleading in silence
She looked right inside of me
So sad to see her tail wag despite her pain and confusion
I massaged her tight cramped muscles and felt her swollen nipples
rub against my hands
The poor little girl....fighting unexpectedly against something unknown
Killing her
and all I could do at the moment was to be with her
to comfort her, to let her know someone cared
and the little dog looked back at me like she knew
I somehow felt an angel's soul
and it made me cry
