Are Butterflies Happy Poem by Liza Sud

Are Butterflies Happy

Are butterflies happy
when they are chased?
It doesn't matter
in magic place.

They are caught and then killed
for beauty's sake!
they are not so selfish -
bring joy to men!

Nabokov loved it -
Lolita's fan.
is that not sadism? -
you catch - get fun!

This is a remarkable poem. The tone is light and pleasant, but there is a theme of death that runs beneath that tone, creating a troubling second tone of loss. The situation is NOT a choice between Good and Evil, but between two Goods, which the saints have always told us is the hardest choice to make. Beauty is on both sides: the beauty of a butterly collection, framed, under glass, hanging on a wall, so people can admire the vivid colors of these delicate creatures. On the other side, is the beauty of a free butterfly in flight, alive, flitting from flower to flower, and we walkers in parks can enjoy the vivid volors of these delicate creatures. Which Good do we choose? Vladimir Nabokov, can you help us out? Saint Francis of Asissi, can YOU help help us decide? I'm stumped! Lovely summer poem, Liza.
