Are You One Of Those People Poem by Francis Duggan

Are You One Of Those People

Are you one of those people that the mosquitos love to bite
Do you hear them buzzing in your bedroom under the cloak of night
You wave your hands above your head for to frighten them away
But still you hear them buzzing as hovering near they stay.

The speck of blood she will draw from you will help the female her eggs for to lay
In the water tank in your backyard and her daughters in some future night or day
Will come to you for a donation of your blood and risk a tragic fate
One blow from you would leave their tiny corpse looking in a mangled state

You try to squash them in the dark and at them loudly swear
But your blood is the blood they need and they won't buzz off to elsewhere
And though where they bite is itchy for a short while they don't leave you with a lasting pain
And your blood is not wasted after all even if mosquitos from it gain.

Are you one of those people who think your boss is great
Even though you know that outside of work you will never be his mate
Yet even during working hours he is not nice to you
Those who say we all need someone to look up to are only stating what is true.

Are you one of those people who in public places proudly say
I voted for the Government on the last Election day
And though you are one of the working poor your boss asked you to take a cut in pay
And your Government governs only for your boss yet you think they are okay.

Are you one of those people who gets passionate about a football team
And every time they happen to win is a boost to your self esteem
And though you don't personally know any of the players a win for them is a win for you
There are many others like you at least you are not one of a few.

Though they are the greatest symbol of rank and inequality
Are you one of those people who look up to royalty
And you place them on a high pedestal despite your poverty
No two human beings do think alike that's how 'twould seem to me.

Are you one of those people who like to wave the National flag
And of your Country men and women's sporting achievements you do feel proud to brag
And though the winning of Olympic Gold is broadcast far and wide
One can never judge a person's worth by his or her's sense of patriotic pride.

Are you one of those people who support those people who on others wage war
And brag of the troops in victory saying how marvellous they are
You say they fought for freedom to think that way is your right
But there would never be a war if every young person refused to fight.

Are you one of those people who has money as your God
Without even a single thought for the poor and the downtrod
There are many who are like you sad to think you are not rare
And thousands are in poverty for every millionaire.

Are you one of those people who don't have a god to which you pray
And the day that people worship to you is just another day
Others feel superior to you since they worship God in song
But you are brave to be different and who is to say that you are wrong.

Are you one of those people who only work to live
And you have got it in your heart to forget and forgive
And you believe in the principle of a fair go for all
Then you are one whose name should be well worthy of recall.
