Around Kallista Poem by Francis Duggan

Around Kallista

Around the Village of Kallista so many different species of trees
The natives as well as exotics as well as deciduous from Lands Overseas
And add to them the northern pines and cypress variety of flora in Kallista is not rare
One can only behold with wonder the different trees and shrubs that grow side by side there.

In the gum woods all around Kallista the white cockatoos squawk and call
And the lyrebird reputed by many to be the greatest mimic of all
Imitate the birds of the woodland the blackbird, kookaburra, butcherbird, shrike thrush, rosella and currawong
Snippets of other birds songs in his own song he never does seem to get wrong.

The mountain ash trees that grow around Kallista they seem to touch the very sky
For a century of years they grow taller and taller as the years go by
To the woods of the Yarra Ranges the Seasons they come and they go
And the mountain ash only grow taller a bit taller each year they grow.

Around Kallista on a Summer's morning the crimson rosellas chirp as they fly
Their colours are surely amamzing to behold them is a thing of great joy
And the pied currawong sing on the tall trees some call them the dark birds of rain
And I always return to Kallista when I go back memory lane.
