As A Scientist Among The Poets - Poem by Liza Sud

As A Scientist Among The Poets -

Rating: 4.0

As a scientist among the poets -
in a china shop elephant's child,
by scientific light you squash them,
you are like a small Bonapart.

But scientific light is a dim light
and it can never touch a soul,
Only stretches mind outwards,
along matter, along the earth.

And I just want to play with you,
like God plays with an elephant,
as He leads him to water rook,
and he quietly drinks with trunk.

Or no - there are no animals,
our islands are different.
There the poet speaks - on mine.
And on yours - there body says.

***

Scientific light is a dim light, / And it can never touch a soul. I've wrestled with the warring claims of science and the arts all my life. I am not gifted in science but I don't reject it. Certainly Einstein's formula E=mc(squared) does more in explaining the nature of material reality than dozens of poems, and you can create new things with it. Look at it this way: GENESIS is a mythic account of creation or cosmology; Einstein's formula explains the engine of that creation - it is a scientific cosmology. And who created that interplay of matter and energy? GOD, the Creator of all things visible and invisible, including the constant transformation of matter into energy and vice versa. And in the early 1950s a Jesuit priest who was also an astronomer wanted to reconcile Genesis - LET THERE BE LIGHT AND THERE WAS LIGHT with scientific cosmology and he devised the Big Bang Theory which is the prevailing scientific view of cosmology. That is just one example of religious faith and scientific theory working in tandem to shed the brightest light. Another was Pope John Paul II's statement God used the process of Evolution to create the world, but God was behind that material mechanism. And the Genesis chapter 2 image of God taking dust spitting in it and fashioning Adam from it is a mythopoeic way of saying human beings are of the earth which has for mullions of years been our only home - until after death - and we then transcend the physical dimension and enter eternity and the spirit world. (It happens in THE GARDEN SONNETS to Elizaveta in Sonnet No. VIII) . Many scientists have been vain, presumptuous and anti-religious belief, but many believers have been vain, presumptuous and anti-scientific research. B-U-T science has discovered so many things about the earth and space, animals and plants, weather and climate and what are all of those things discovered that fill book after book - It's all of it the creation brought forth into the bright light of knowledge and every single piece of that huge inventory of things we know through science was individually created by God. That's what the children of Abraham believe. It's time to END this unworthy conflict between what revelation reveals and what science reveals. And so ends my argument which I've labored over for decades. Oh, I can see the Angel Gabriel nodding his head, and there's St. Francis, that lover of all things earthly and heavenly, smiling down at me.

I am both a scientist and a poet. As such, I appreciated this poem doubly
