As Of The Sea I Have Poem by Emmanuel George Cefai

As Of The Sea I Have

As of the sea I have
Not just the scent
The salt
But more
More
There be more
That ties me to the waters
As descendant to ancestor.

Ay! In us there be written
That Call
That Seal
In our very hearts it lies
As to mother the umbilical chord.

I went by the open sea last Night.
To hear the winds speak
To hear the caves tell
Yarns from the waters.
To hear the waters seethe.

Roared high the winds
But spoke: 'Let the sea
Be in you
Close your eyes with it'

Then rattled the caves as of rocks
Giant moving-rolled.

Then the caves spoke:
‘For this day we will not
Speak, tell of yarns
That's better in a summer breeze
When serene airs blow in the face.
But, pray, remember in these
Waters so many vessels pine
So many skeletons.'

Then spoke the seething waters
They were brief:
That ancient matter that protoplasm made
Remains still in us
In us survives and teems
And thus we waters carry ancientness
And thus we waters carry Primitive
Our call, our seething
In seething, we call
Moved by Circe spells and Arcanness
And bearing inside the Primitive
