At The Helm Poem by Chuck Toll

At The Helm

Rating: 5.0

Vice President Cheney would dispute
That polls and surveys constitute
A factor that his boss should track
In weighing options for Iraq.

To watch the polling ups and downs
When planning strategy is dumb, he frowns.
Informed that polls have long been low
With most opposing war, he says, “So? ”

Vice President Cheney, like his boss,
Has not served in war or suffered loss.
Yet they know best, of this he’s sure.
Why should they care if most demur?

He does not want the war impeded,
And points to signs of progress needed.
When asked about four thousand dead,
He shrugged. “They volunteered, ” he said.
