August 19,2011 Poem by Karen Esperanza

August 19,2011

Make me forget for a while,
that I'm not anyone at all.
That only a small shrewd smile,
would alleviate this fall.

Down down the rabbit hole we go,
to a world we made up inside our minds,
and yet still you keep me mindful,
of everything I've left behind.

Laughter and lies, books bound endless
pages torn wrapped around all the sounds and visuals
streaming across an empty room.
And you fall,
in the midst of it all
but it keeps going.
Without a push,
without a command,
like a rock
slowly turning into sand.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I think these are things you realize when you are going through your teenagery angsty phases, if you go through them at all. There is some mild self- loathing. Maybe depression. I was going through a phase where I wasn't motivated at all for anything whatsoever, and it was so strange to me that everyone around me was capable of being happy and motivated- by nothing really. I later found out that this paradox is a beautiful part of life.
