August In The Vaca Mountains - Poem by Steven Federle

"Everything must be elevated and transformed by the action of God, in love and faith." Thomas Merton

August descends.

Gentle heat
swoons on
holy ground.

Death sweetly sings,
in the scything wind,
in shafts of
shifting grass
resplendent!

The harvest is ready,

Make full the granaries;
make ready the land
for winter's
harsh hand.
