The mottled blanket of autumn tones lay below
Above, a small maple tree almost denuded and bare
Its last few remaining leaves of luminous blaze
Awaiting their fate to break from the hosting stem
Shortly to become part of that autumn coverlet
To be lost amongst the heap of spent summer foliage
One of many thousands amid vibrant colorisms
Tones of deep reds, mauves and burnished gold
Yellows and silky creams, browns of rich velvet
A palette of wondrous hues only nature could conceive
Before too long, those vibrant colors will diminish
Transform into a pile of fading, crumbling leafage
Awaiting to be scooped and bagged for use as compost
Returning rich nutrients to revitalize the soil
Heralding a path for strong new Spring leaf growth
