Bad Poetry Poem by Daniel Y.

Bad Poetry

Let us see, let us see
tell us, dear, of bad poetry.

Like thus, they simile.
and metaphor they drown.
A vapid rhyme in every line.
And predictable, oh so suicidal stanzas.
Worshipping cliche and slogan.
Counting syll-a-bles so me-chan-i-ca-lly.

Talking about God
‘cause they think that makes it poetry.
But God ain't crying ‘cause he likes the poem.
Nor is he flattered by plagiary.

The picture they draw with words
is like a stick-figure house
with crayon outside the lines.
lacking any novelty.
a slosh of letters without thought
best described as verbal constipation
there is no systematic love of imagination!
not emotion, nor a voice;
strung into a children's story.

No matter how your poem changes,
the dead trees you write on
stay the same, flat and dead.
Woe is me
Redundant: woe is me.
no hindsight
no foresight
no insight

YES - YES -YES - You define, deconstruct, hold up for ridicule, expose to its rotten core, trample, cut its Hydra heads, that sort of thing. It has to be done periodically, but I'm glad you took the initiative, because I am reluctant to tell the truth (Too many years of grading papers, tests, etc. - How do you tell someone they have a B- soul? that's my conundrum - but, , , ,) You have cleared the air. And it needed clearing so the GOOD POEMS can be clearly seen, which is their birthright as GOOD poems. How will people react to the stern truth? Defensively at first. Then slowly they will come to agree. THERE IS NO SYSTEMATIC LOVE OF THE IMAGINATION! We have to come back to this statement - it is the core issue of all creative writing, but especially poetry.
