Barren Land Poem by Somanathan Iyer

Barren Land

Rating: 3.5

Surrounded by trees
situated near a pond
lies there a tiny land
that remained always barren
being barren not its fault
belittled it felt for not of any use
not a grass it could grow
to attract the cattle
not a bush it could grow
to attract any birds
grief it felt thinking of its plight
to God it sent all its grievance
next day came a man
with a bag full of grains
scattered the grains that he brought
all through the stretch
moments within assembled there
multiples of birds and squirrels
to feast on the grains
strewn all over barren land
a daily routine then after
is the scene till now
left in ecstasy is our barren land
for finding a meaning in its existence

A poem in the first few lines made it a suspense and what was the barren land that going to change and then comes the man with a bag full of grains and thought it for something cultivating in the barren land with certain efforts by the man but then I saw it was attracting birds and squirrels which is out of the imagination of the reader and good idea and imagination of the poet as it made into a suspense which made the poem beautiful. I liked it.

I thought the man must have come with grain to plough and sow the seeds! It seems an ideal place for cultivation with a pond close to it for irrigation! If he had done so, in no time the seeds would have sprouted, leaving it a green stretch! Remaining barren is never welcome! Our lives must be a source of joy or benefit to others! Here the squirrels and birds are benefited and the stretch of land feels a sense of self fulfillment.... A great poem with a nice message!
