POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM

In this Basho haiku, the quail, hidden in the bush, can sing out once the hawk's eyes have darkened (during nightime hours) .This is just one lesson in survival that Basho must have noted personally as a large number of his poems/haiku are based on his actual observations in nature settings.
