Beasts And Birds Poem by steve olver

Beasts And Birds

Rating: 3.5

 Blackbird perches, song unleashed
To the pale twilight of a day.
Calm beauty that is of his world
No dreams or ambitions have breached.

He cares not for our longing thoughts,
Our greed, our wars or fruitless taunts.
For him the river flows to sea,
In the why and wherefore
there's no plea.
Wind blows, leaves fall, grass doth grow,
Of reason, gain or loss; why's he to know?

The gundog in his bed still slumbers
More reason he may have,
But like our flighty friend sets aside
All that thought encumbers.
His love unthinking given-
-  we don't need to chide.

Elephantine strength and that of horse
We break and train to our own use.
This we do, we think as men.
But harken with love they'll give-
- this strength times ten!

There is no moral to this tale
Save the stupidity of men
Who always take a route to fail
When beasts and birds win-
- because they can!
