Becoming A Man Poem by Willem VanVoorthuysen

Becoming A Man

I was swimming in the chilly water
of our family's barbecuing pool,
waiting for uncle Chris' booming
'Dogs and buns are ready! 'call.

I practiced diving, but doing that,
stayed under water a tad too long
and d r e a m e d that I was dying
while not quite ready for it yet...

So I asked God, 'O Lord, why now?
I haven't even had a girlfriend yet! ',
yet, right away, I realized how silly
that must have sounded to Him...

Then, suddenly all around me, I felt
the warmly reassuring presence of
the Holy Spirit, and fell into a deep
and restful sleep, and time stood still...

I woke up on the hard stone floor
around the pool, while everyone else
looked down at me, and loudly cheered,
and praised and thanked the Lord!

That night, back safely with my parents,
I decided that it was really about time
for me, a young man of almost fourteen,
to find the ideal woman for my soul-mate.

During the next ten years I met a few
that I admired, but lacked the means
and the courage to approach them,
until I found H E R, by God's grace!
