Behind The Veneer Poem by Leria Hawkins

Behind The Veneer

Date: January 29,2012

Waiting to fit
In the breath that you breathe
Waiting to fall
Into the depths of your seas
I don't know why, can't figure it out
Why you've opened the doors
Then shut me out
A serpent that's crawling
Beneath your skin
You keep searching for ways
To let it in
And the fire that's been burning
Behind your eyes
Can't find the whole truth
When it's mixed with the lies
You're still feigning of innocence
Like fresh fallen snow
But the torment's so deep
It's stolen your soul
In whispers as soft as a serenade
The passion you've known
Is beginning to fade
I've waited to fit
And it's finally clear
There's nothing to hold
Behind the veneer
