Being A Mother In The War Poem by Sahra Hussein

Being A Mother In The War

What can I say being a mother in the war
When gangs shot my husband in the middle of the night
I watch my child bleeding in front of my eyes
I can't help my injured child
I leave him behind while he cries my name
To save other ones
I carry one in front of me and one on my back
Walking in the middle of nowhere
Without food to eat or water to drink
We may become food for the animal who is hunting us
I sit beside my children all night long
Guarding them from the animal
I see a light shine far away
I smile with a tired face
I hope for life again
I don't know what to do when I can't feed the child who is crying in my lap
I don't know what to do
Leaving my children under a tree while working
A difficult job to feed and to find a home for my sweet children
Sometimes getting beaten from the work, but I can't leave it anyway
What can I say about what life means to me
When I only know I am frail
