Betrayal Poem by shannon wright

Betrayal

Rating: 5.0

isn’t it funny how we lull ourselves
or allow ourselves to feel
a false sense of security
but when looking back
at photos and cards
and words spoken and swallowed
the untruth is so glaring
red letters to the backdropp of life
incriminating our “loved ones”
illuminating true feelings
with their future actions.

and aren’t we so innocent
believing at the time
the lies that are dropped at our feet.
but what fools we are
to take those scraps of attention
like they are the lifeblood
of a relationship.
pathetic and stupid
for accepting second rate love.
when their eye is on the prize
that lies just behind us.

close enough, in fact,
for us to trick our loves eye into believing
that we are the real thing.
we are the one they love.
foolish foolish belief.
but not to worry,
time always unveils the truth.
time shows that we never were.
distance proves what we didn’t want to see.

never think someone is beneath you.
never trust that your loved one wouldn’t sink so low.
don’t accept that the one you think isn’t good enough
wouldn’t do in just the right pinch.
because trust me….
they have the tongue of a snake
to sell the lies you can’t choke on.
stroking the ego of your one true love.
telling them what they needs to hear.
what they want to hear from us.
lies are much easier to sell
than the truth about ourselves.
those will shove those down their throat soon enough
but the best irony of all is this:

there will be another standing in line behind
to take the scraps of the one who stole from you.
and they will have reaped what they've sown
and shed ten times the tears they caused you.
and you will look on with pity
at another broken life,
glad you learned that lesson long ago.
