Blackbirds Poem by Barry Middleton

Blackbirds

The blackbirds came,
there is only one way
to look at blackbirds.
Blackbirds swarmed,
scavenged the grass.
They moved en masse
like schooling fish,
then traveled south.
The blackbirds know
what God's rules are.
They know cold oceans
of air are flowing south.
The blackbirds know
what time is coming,
what season of year.
There is only one way
to look at blackbirds.
If I look to the sky
I know the change
that is on me soon.
The blackbird's song
is a soft summoning.
There is only one way
to look at blackbirds
and that is to learn.
They came in hungry,
fed and flew away.
One man watching;
the blackbirds sang.
