Blessed Encounter Poem by Amanda Jane Yates

Blessed Encounter

Just an arm and a half away
I saw six tortoiseshell butterflies
Feeding on clusters of purple flowers.

So close that I could see
Every tiny perfect petal
Grouped on slender green stems.

I could admire the
black and white patterns
On fluttering orange wings.

The flowers bobbed daintily
In a balmy Summer breeze
Hair thin antennae flickered.

Half in a trance, motionless
I sat transfixed
By these beautiful visitors.

It's said that seeing butterflies
Is a sign that angels
Are close at hand.

I sent silent thanks
For this welcome message.
Were a crowd of angels hovering nearby?
