Brick Poem by Udaya R. Tennakoon

Brick

To build a wall
Of a broken heart
By an empathy hope

To make a home
In a world
To live in together
With freedom of rooms

If it is needed
Giving a space
For unity in diversity
When humanity is crumbled

If it flies and share
Where they hope
To care and fair
There it makes
A beautiful chair

There is a division in this poem between ideal things imagined and real things experienced, and hope, however fragile it is, is like a plus factor - possibly turning the real into the ideal. The closing image of the chair dovetails with the image of home in the beginning. Both stand for comfort and belonging in a world which denies them to you. But the poem contains hope in their reality as things. Now if people's attitudes would have the integrity of these things, the world would greet you brightly.
