—this poem is for … and in memory of J. Michael Cook, recently deceased, hometown friend, whom in 1975
introduced me to the wonderful guitar-work of Leo Kottke

'You can't go back; it's not the same
while I've counted the hours, and time
remains, and time … hear the wind howl! '
—Leo Kottke on guitar playing and singing 'Hear The Wind Howl', You Tube Music Video

Briefly, ever so briefly you blew into my life,
then blew out like those Iowa summer winds
that suddenly appeared, gusted through our acreage
just north of Storm Lake; like Iowa barn swallows
that glided swiftly and gracefully into and out of
the hay loft of our barn—that quickly you appeared,
left an impression, then disappeared from my life.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Relationships are fleeting, transient, as this poem suggests. All life—animal, human, plant and insect—is transient, fleeting, shimmering.
