Broken Heart Poem by Barry Van Allen

Broken Heart

As if a stalker in my shadow,
I never heard the warnings,
remaining ignorant and blissful,
while a storm was surely swarming.

With every cloud that gathered,
and with the distant sound of thunder,
convinced that nothing was the matter,
my life would soon be torn asunder.

A little here, a little there,
at first the signs were subtle,
then contradictious indications,
left me frightened and befuddled.

Breathlessness and sleeplessness,
it seems that I was all congested,
and so I visited the wizard,
who said that I should be arrested.

Speeding forth with flashing lights,
I was riding in the rear,
I was held for days in custody,
before they let me reappear.

I made no claim of innocence,
and was consequently sentenced,
to pay my dues for long abuse,
with all attendant consequences.

NO more eating this and that,
NO more smoking those,
NO more drinking this and that,
and TAKE a dozen daily doses!

Although slightly out of rhythm,
the beat goes weakly on,
I'm happy just to tap my feet,
as I listen to life's song.

I now walk the straight and narrow,
accepting this fresh start,
looking forward to tomorrow,
... albeit with a broken heart.
