Burning Summer Poem by Joyce Hemsley

Burning Summer

In the dry and long hot summer
The sun beamed on and on
Till earth was bleached and colourless
And water ~ there was none.

Famine came and famine stayed
So long, so very long,
In that hot summer of years ago
When nature's force went wrong.

Mothers starved, babies died,
and birds sang not their song
In that dry and stifling weather
when drought said 'no' to the swan.
