Cats Poem by Raymond Farrell

Cats

I've heard it said and believe it's true
You can never really own a cat
Pet or pamper them, whatever you do
Cats do as they wish and that is that.

They are not averse to soaking up affection
(Stupidity is not a common cat trait)
But acceptance or rejection
Is their choice not a matter of fate.

Independence, aloofness, banal disregard
Or the first to do their own thing
Defining the personality of cats is hard
Despised by some, to others they're King.

Well, whatever the case may be
Cats will not stoop to begging on command
Demand from man grudging equality
And wisely will not shake his hand.
