Cheerio Poem by Edmund V. Strolis

Cheerio

Rating: 5.0

This eve I have to clear a place
This garden has become overgrown
So many things that once thrived here
Now can no longer belong
No more desire to tend pale vines
Too tired for tangled lives
No more room for lame excuses
I don't have that kind of time.

Those things with the deepest roots must go
They have been with me too long
Faces of fools and their shallow rules
I will pluck these weeds until they're gone
So if you do not hear from me
If I avoid the social game
I tip my cap and say to you
Cheerio! Good Luck, good day

Hi Edmund, Lovely poem. Yes, the garden you have identified for clean-up is the very first one to be cleaned. Overgrown pale vines (of memories?) , deep-rooted (influence of) tangled lives, lame excuses-everything must go! A thorough clean is needed urgently. Your lighter-veined poem is a harsh, serious statement. To look outside is to start by looking inside (one's own mind) . As famous Indian thinker and reformer Vinoba Bhave said, the clean up should start from (one's) inside. He said, hum lota malte hein, baahar se (We only clean the outer) . And, of course, your poem resonates the famous shloka from Bhagavat Gita, which I have quoted on ph quite often, Uddharetatman Aatmanam..... Great work. Congrats.10++

Do not allow yourself to imagine that revolutionary thinking can be propagated by governmental power. Vinoba Bhave I am indebted to you for your mystic signposts pointing towards the words of this Indian thinker and reformer. Some truths I embrace and others are a work in progress. You know that John Lennon is mistakenly held up as a Liberal idol. A title that he would refuse. He had strong traditional beliefs. In fatherhood and marriage. In a structured society and in individual enlightenment versus group think. I have always gravitated to those minds that transcend the commonplace. He has been wrongly assigned the role of championing revolution by people that wanted to make him into an image that fit their desires. He rejected this way of thinking vehemently. This quote from Bhave I admire very much- It is only when our life proceeds within bounds and in an accepted, disciplined way, that the mind can be free. This reminds me of the British essayist G.K.Chesterton- To have a right to do a thing is not at all the same as to be right in doing it. Yes much weeding must be done. I suppose I should be better at being tolerant but sometimes I find that a simple garden, well maintained, oftentimes bears fewer but more delicious fruit.

Love it. Just brilliant Eddie. A wonderful way with words you have. Enjoy your solitude in your freedom. It's not a lonely place. Quite the opposite. Thank you
