Safe Travels - Poem by Edmund V. Strolis

Bull elephant is what they call you
Big name, big beast
They do not do you justice
What do you call yourself?

You are the earth cracked and weathered
Time encased in perfection
All that gravity will bear
Mountain muscle moving

And yet I am your equal
Two eyes, two ears, four limbs a nose
Our earthly trademark
Glowing in the universe

I marvel at you, do you at me?
Respectful in our distance
Brother beast I salute you
And wish your family safe travels

Topic(s) of this poem: dignity, love, nature, respect, understanding

    Brother beast I salute you

I wish this bonhomie between man and the lovely wild life prevails for all times to come. Their co-existence will ensure the charm and worth of life on this planet. Lovely poem. Thanks.

Yes indeed Rajnish, thank you for your kind words. Yes co-existence, we are well aware that there are those that selfishly harvest them for their tusks and yet those lost souls do not represent our race. When we as people are not jostled at the watering hole of life we are respecters and protectors of our brothers. I believe that at the core we are good.

Yes the gentle giant. We have much to learn from him or at the very least we should give him a wide range to follow his ancient footsteps.

I couldn't resist this one as I love elephants. Very well penned. I love the second stanza which captures the power and beauty of the elephant. Congratulations for a very much deserved poem of the day. (Report) Reply

To be around an elephant is a wonderful thing. They seem to carry with them the very earth that they majestically trudge across. Even in captivity an elephant never loses its nobility.

Congratulations for getting this beautiful poem of yours selected as 'Poem of the Day'. We, Indians, revere this animal. However poachers have made its life miserable. (Report) Reply

Poachers-such a low form of being. Selfish, heartless, greedy. In contrast those creatures and its defenders are all the more noble in comparison. I am in America. have only one country outside of my nation that I desire to visit and that is India. I intend to do so next year. Stay well my friend!

Finally! Edmund Strolis is poet of the day! Congrats Edmund. I had missed this poem. Love it. Well written. I love that line you are the earth cracked and weathered. The only thing I ask is that you include a sketch with this one. You have a way of peering into all creatures and bringing out the unique and special in their character. Thanks for sharing your poem. True story Pamela when I was in elementary school I sketched the equivalent of this picture on poster board and actually for my age it came out pretty good! Believe me because if it had not I would just as easily say it looked lousy. I really do feel this way about creatures. I am far from alone. In the poem I also convey that it is okay to feel the equal of a creature. The more we connect the less chance that we will allow those innocent creatures to be harmed, We mammals have to stick together!

a wonderful poem of man and an endangered species that should be left to roam in their own homelands freely with out the worry of poachers.........................superbly written (Report) Reply

Edmund Strolis Edmund Strolis (6/24/2017 11:36:00 PM)

Yes you are spot on. That is why I wrote the line respectful in our distance. The elephants history with mankind and poachers extends back to the Mastodon. The modern elephant is a treasure deserving respect and space.......

    Hey, Edmund!

Good to see your name with the poem of the day.

I especially like in this poem the excellent descriptions in the second stanza and the way you address Mr. Elephant. This is another example from you of someone who writes with skill.

    Respectful in our distance
    Brother beast I salute you
And wish your family safe travels - - -Like human beings, nature's other animals too have their rightful place on this earth. The nature's variety is its beauty. We should be caring towards other animals and birds, trees and vines of nature. Then only earth will be a beautiful place for all.
Congratulations for being Poet of the Day.

Thank you Bharati. I believe that most people hold the large beasts in respect however I have always thought that we should be in awe of all creatures. It seems as if the most interesting things in the natural world are taken for granted. I can't imagine being that way in fact each day I find myself more amazed by things that are often ignored.
