Chengelo Is My Betrothed Poem by Suzawaka Phiri

Chengelo Is My Betrothed

Rating: 4.0

Chengelo is my betrothed
Where the gods not told?
The love of my life is Chengelo
She is my heart and soul.
Why should she serve in the temple?
Is it becuase my background is humble?
Tell the priest, you've seen wrong
Chengelo is mine alone, my only song.
Chengelo is my flower,
Even in sacred book, we are together
Who can the gods surely pick her?
Yes, she is Kasuba's daughter,
Yes, she is Mweshi's daughter,
But above all, she is my true lover.
For Chengelo's hand, I will wrestle the gods,
For Chengelo's hand, I will challenge the gods,
She is mine and mine alone.
