Suddenly there's calm.
A sincere smile at journey's end
No trepidation now.
No more need of hope or use for tears.
No yearning for lovers past.
No pride in the gathered artifacts of achievement
or the fading photographs of youth.
Even the memories belong to a different self,
someone with future plans and goals.
There is only this hour. This kind release.
A chair on the veranda. The kiss of a gentle breeze.
And the lullaby of the collared dove
to whisper her to sleep
