Closer Poem by Rhonda Baker

Closer

I was plain and you seemed to have it all
People come into our lives just after we fall
Help us to see how life must first be wrought
We can do so much with what we've got
Sometimes we need to just trust and let go of the past
To quit the inner dialog and the endless fast
Inside is a butterfly with wings of gold
So much of your life is still untold
I will never achieve all that I could
But because of you I got closer then I ever would

I'm made from the people who've molded me
Who never realized what their kind deeds would see
Words you've said tattooed on my soul
Have brought me out of darkness black as coal
All of you have garden me, like a giant oak
Each of you feeding it like a fire stoked
I hope I nourished you all, just the same
Giving credit to your life by knowing my name
I will never achieve all that I could
But because of you I got closer then I ever would
