Confessions Of Urmila 02 - Soothsayers Poem by Unnikrishnan Sivasankara Menon

Confessions Of Urmila 02 - Soothsayers

Our kingdom, the Videha was famous
as rich and fertile, bound by rivers
the Holy Ganga in the South,
Kaushiki and Sadanira in East and West.

The mighty Himalayan Mountains
stood guard in the North.
Not far was the great kingdom
of Ayodhya ruled King Dasharatha.

Sages wandering from place to place
used to visit or palace too, all said invariably
Ram, the prince of Ayodhya will marry Sita;
none of them predicted anything about me!

I felt insignificant and insulted,
to overcome the insult
I took my learning seriously
that earned me a name as a scholar.

Soon I was participating in debates
on anything under the sun
and defeating many a learned men;
my name spread across many borders.

Still, the soothsayers said
nothing about my future!

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

Urmila is pictured as a very learned and upright woman. In the drama Kanchana Sita by late CN Sreekanthan Nair, she powerfully questions the Maryada Purushotham Ram himself leaving him fumbling for words.

Rivers Kaushiki and Sadanira are tributaries to the great River Ganga (the English called it the Ganges) .
