The picture
of a mother
standing guard
to the carcass
of her baby
for hours
without
moving a limb
without
food and water.
How soft
a heart
the pachyderm
hides
in her
thick
dark
hide!
eyes welled
throat parched
I sat before
the TV,
my heart
heavy
like a millstone.
A heartfelt write. I liked how the piece ended with a powerful simile
This is so touching and we'll articulated, you choice of word and short sentences
Thank you, Poet Auaduma. Motherhood is a distinction, an emotion that affects all living beings across many species. Nature has placed this gene in them to support the survival of life
Tomorrow, the 12 May 2024 Is Mother's Day. May I invite all the member-poets on ph to read this poem on motherhood
Poet Magadha Rani has added this poem to her favourites. Thank you Dear Poet for favouriting this ode to motherhood
While watching a science program, I witnessed the grief of a baby elephant, whose mother was killed. The other herd members comforted the baby. It really tugged at my heartstrings. Elephants are very close knit. Love is the universal language. Great poem!
Evelyn, as you said, love is The Universal Language, and Mother's love lasts. First watchers in the Western Ghats, India say that they have seen mother elephants returning to watch the mere skeletal remains of their cubs for years.
Some African tribesmen have reported to have witnessed "rituals" of the elephants group, when one in the group dies.
Love is the language of the universe, rather, Evelyn. Thank you for your detailed note, dear poet.
