Conversations Ii (Over Coffee) Poem by Cait Oiler

Conversations Ii (Over Coffee)

Your gaze seemed colder than the coffee warming my hands,
I couldn’t help but fall back into the memories of those forgotten, warm days,
The sun felt warm on my back as the cool water splashed our faces,
“I wish I was wiser.” You say.
“I wish it was warmer.” I say falling back into the bleak, winter day.
I search your eyes,
There’s a sadness that lingers,
A regret that I know we both share,
“Quit.” You say.
“What? ” I say.
“I know you.”

Time has drifted us back to the waves tossing and turning passionately through the night,
The sound of their collision bursting through our ears,
The cool sand, sticking between our toes,
Your arm around my waist,
The feeling of forever,
The last chance,
The moment,
Then, everything is gone.

'Not like I know you.” I say.
You check your watch.
You smile,
It’s time for you to leave.
We both know that this is goodbye,
Goodbye until we somehow meet again,
A goodbye until we need to feel alive again.
