Cry Nigeria Poem by stephen yusuf

Cry Nigeria

I pray for dawning, to this night our heart is aching
Help us dear Lord or we can't make it.

A week ago this news goes
A kid's brain was exposed
Not with surgeons scarpels
Nay, but with hurling of machetes.
When have we reached here? !

I pray for rains, to this dryness of our soul good Lord shower.
Help us dear lord or we won't make it

The kid left home happily that morning
Mother's kisses and dads smile
And as usual, teacher's show of pride
At 10 he could take his way back home
Only this day his blood smears the earth!

I pray for your touch, to this hardness of our heart let it softens
Help us dear Lord or we will be doomed.

His mum at home was whirling
His dad on her hands bleeding
His neck in her presence slain
Her house with fire blazing…
Gash! ! ! ....when did we reach here? !

I pray for deliverance, our evil hearts needs purging
Help us dear Lord we need redemption.

I cried as I yearn, bleed as I wrote and wonder as I think
From where have we gone this far?
When did our conscience pass thru such fire?
That we have no value for life, no respect for humanity
No remorse or feelings of guilt as we perpetrate evil….
Cry Nigeria
Put on sack clothes and cover thy self in ashes
Refuse meal and drink no water
Cry Nigeria for thy redemption
The blood of innocence cried daily against thee
Cry Nigeria cry! ! ! .

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is a heartfelt tribute to all the victims of religious crisis in Nigeria. In Plateau, Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Yobe, Maiduguri, Sokoto e.t.c. ‘tis being the worst level of insanity of man against his fellow man, and an insult to his maker, if it's in his name this evil is perpetrated. Both the two rival religions have regarded him as loving, peaceful and a merciful God, it is clear such inhumanity could not befriend these qualities or ideas.
